Course Update

May has brought us above average temperatures with little rainfall. We are doing everything we can with our irrigation system to keep things growing but nothing compares to a good soaking rain from mother nature. The zoysia grass tees and fwys are doing well with the high temperatures and should transition well into summer. Greens have healed up well since aerification and are looking good.

Since school is out the grounds crew has added a few new employees. One of them is our intern Chad Morrison who is a student at Kansas State and is pursuing a degree in Turfgrass Maintenance. Chad worked out here last year and will be an asset to our staff this year.

See you on the course  !

Course Update

The weather this spring has had its ups and downs. We have had 90 degree weather followed by light frost a few days later. The zoysia grass still does not know what to do. It has comeout of winter dormancy only to be shocked by frosty mornings and dry weather. These past few weeks have been very dry, looks like today we are going to get some much needed rain.
This week we will start topdressing and rolling greens since the aerification holes have healed up nicely. The crew has been busy keeping up with mowing, watering and also working on other course projects. This past week we installed a new water fountain in the main pond and we are working on constructing a new tee box on hole 8. The tee box will add a different yardage and more tee space for the white and blue blocks.

Greens Mowers

The maintenance department just got in 4 Toro walking greens mowers. These mowers will allow for a more precise cut resulting in smoother and faster putting conditions. These new machines are light weight which will also help in reducing stress on the greens during the summer months. We are going to try to walkmow greens 4-5 times a week .

Come check out the new cut!

Greens Aerification

Monday and Tuesday we will be aerifying the greens. This is a necessary process that allows better air circulation, releaves compaction, improves drainage and allows for better root growth. This will be done once in the spring and once in the fall. We first aerify the green and remove all of the soil plugs. The holes are 1/2 inch in diameter and 3 1/2 inches deep. After the holes are open we will add sand to the green and brush it back in the holes (for all the greens we will use around 45-60 tons of sand.) After that we will fertilize the green, roll the surface to get all the bumps out and water everything in. The F9 was completed on Monday and is ready for golf on Tuesday.

The pictures show the open holes after the plugs have been picked up, spreading the sand on the green, and the last picture is a profile of the green after aerification; you can see the new channels of lighter sand about 2 inches apart going through the profile.

Tour Events are off and running!

stpatgal10
The 10th Annual St Pat's Scramble was held Saturday, March 17th.  It was the first of many fun 2012 Tour at Falcon Lakes events.

Thanks to all of the players that participated! In spite of 25-30 mph winds two teams broke 60!

We are now accepting registration for our Green Jacket Best Ball on April 6th. Quick reminder that the greens will be aerified next Monday and Tuesday, March 26th and 27th.

Fairways and greens,

Mike
