The weather this spring has had its ups and downs. We have had 90 degree weather followed by light frost a few days later. The zoysia grass still does not know what to do. It has comeout of winter dormancy only to be shocked by frosty mornings and dry weather. These past few weeks have been very dry, looks like today we are going to get some much needed rain.
This week we will start topdressing and rolling greens since the aerification holes have healed up nicely. The crew has been busy keeping up with mowing, watering and also working on other course projects. This past week we installed a new water fountain in the main pond and we are working on constructing a new tee box on hole 8. The tee box will add a different yardage and more tee space for the white and blue blocks.

The maintenance department just got in 4 Toro walking greens mowers. These mowers will allow for a more precise cut resulting in smoother and faster putting conditions. These new machines are light weight which will also help in reducing stress on the greens during the summer months. We are going to try to walkmow greens 4-5 times a week .

Come check out the new cut!

Monday and Tuesday we will be aerifying the greens. This is a necessary process that allows better air circulation, releaves compaction, improves drainage and allows for better root growth. This will be done once in the spring and once in the fall. We first aerify the green and remove all of the soil plugs. The holes are 1/2 inch in diameter and 3 1/2 inches deep. After the holes are open we will add sand to the green and brush it back in the holes (for all the greens we will use around 45-60 tons of sand.) After that we will fertilize the green, roll the surface to get all the bumps out and water everything in. The F9 was completed on Monday and is ready for golf on Tuesday.

The pictures show the open holes after the plugs have been picked up, spreading the sand on the green, and the last picture is a profile of the green after aerification; you can see the new channels of lighter sand about 2 inches apart going through the profile.

This past week we sodded the bunkers on the chipping green and hole #2. These bunker edges had lost their shape and needed to be reconstructed. Please avoid walking up these bunker faces until the grass has had time to root down and become more stable.

Spring is finally here! The grass is starting to green up and soon the crew will be out mowing. In the past few weeks we have mowed and rolled the greens to smooth out the surface from winter and speed them up. Lately the crew has been busy planting about 200 trees out on the course mostly in the native areas. The trees being planted are Purple Ash, Red Sunset Maple, Green Mountain Sugar Maple and Pines. We will also be transplanting 24 trees with a tree spade to new locations to enhance the playablity of the course and allow better growing conditions for the turf in the rough.
